Arft eager to defend Jamaica Open

HIS FLIGHT is already booked and he is itching to get on the course. Once again as the reigning Jamaica Open Golf Champion, American Andrew Arft, gets set to attempt a title defence at the prestigious event, taking place from November 9-12 at the scenic Tryall Golf Club in Hanover.

The Orlando native says he is keen to again get his hands on the trophy and, even better, get a share of the tournament purse of US$110,000.

Arft’s victory last year in the 56th edition of the Open was spectacular.

He led from start to finish, posting an impressive combined score of seven under par 209, with rounds of six under par 66, even par 72, and one under par 71.

Excitement and confidence

Arft expressed excitement and confidence, as he believes Tryall is easily becoming one of his favourite golf courses.

“I am ecstatic to get back to Jamaica and the Tryall Golf Club. Last year was a special year for me at Tryall and I have great memories here. I am hoping that positivity can carry through to my golf game as well this year.”

Arft’s win last year was a momentous one, both for his career and personal life. The victory was not only significant but also a rare gem in a sport where wins don’t come frequently.

“After winning last year, the support from other players and friends has been well received. There was quite some satisfaction for me as well. Wins are not always frequent in golf, and I was happy to enjoy that win over the holidays with family and friends,” he added.

However, Arft is under no illusions about the challenge that lies ahead. He knows that repeating last year’s success will require a similar level of focus, especially on the demanding Tryall greens.

“To defend my title, it’ll take another good week of putting and staying mentally sharp. Ball striking is quite dependent on the wind at Tryall, but navigating the greens here is where you can gain shots on the field. But, more importantly, if I defend this year, it’ll be because I was able to free up, play loose, as some guys say.”

As Arft continues to navigate his career, his ambitions have evolved, but, for now, he’s focused on one thing: defending his title.

“My aspirations in golf have changed throughout my life. I didn’t have any to play professionally until my senior year of college. But now, with success like I had last year at Tryall and other events throughout the year, I’ve again changed my aspirations to something bigger. But, for now, I find it best to focus on my next tournament, my next round, and my next shot.”
