Defending world champions Argentina extended their lead in the South American World Cup Qualifiers to five points after beating Peru 1-0 in Buenos Aires thanks to a 55th minute goal from Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez.
It was Lautaro’s 37th international goal, pulling his level with Argentine legend the late Diego Maradona.
Five time champions Brazil and Uruguay played out a 1-1 draw in Salvador.
Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde gave Uruguay the lead on 55 minutes but that was cancelled out seven minutes later by Gerson with his first international goal.
Brazil remain fifth in the standings while Uruguay remain second.
In other games, captain Enner Valencia scored in the seventh minute as Ecuador beat Colombia 1-0 away, Chile beat Venezuela 4-2 while Bolivia and Paraguay drew 2-2.
