Biden Endorses VP Harris for Presidential Bid

Outgoing US President Joe Biden has endorsed his vice-president, Kamala Harris, to become the Democratic nominee in the US presidential race in November.

Biden endorsed Harris moments after announcing that he was ending his own presidential run.

“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” said Biden in a post on social media.

The endorsement comes on a seismic day in US politics. In offering his backing to Harris, Biden called for the Democratic party to rally around the vice-president and “beat Trump”.

Trump is surging in the political polls following what was a celebratory Republican National Convention. The Republican party is in high spirits after the former president was injured in but survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.

That is in stark contrast to the mood in the Democratic camp with senior party figures pushing for President Joe Biden to end his re-election campaign due to concerns over his age.

The 81-year-old Biden bowed to those pressures on Sunday when he announced he’ll not be seeking a second term in office in November.

President Biden has since said selecting Harris as his vice-president is the ‘best decision’ he’s made.
