Reggae and dancehall producer BL Tha Hook Slaya is ecstatic that his 2017 song Hit the Strip , which he co-wrote and produced, was prominently featured in the critically acclaimed film Anora, which swept the recently held 97th Academy Awards.

“Truthfully this is one of my proudest things that I have done to date, and I am honored to have been part of it,” Hook Slaya told DancehallMag. The track was written by him and Brett Walter Bull but is performed by Bull.

When asked what criteria he looks for when giving consideration to co-writing, he explained, “ I just want to know the artist and co-writers are as dedicated to my craft as I am. I am very serious about my work and I need to know that anyone else I bring in is on the same page, otherwise I cannot work with that person,”.

Anora, directed by Sean Baker, is a Brooklyn-set comedy-drama that tells the story of Anora Mikheeva, a young stripper who marries the son of a Russian oligarch. The film delves into themes of love, identity, and societal expectations, all set against the backdrop of New York’s vibrant nightlife. Upon its release, Anora garnered widespread critical acclaim, culminating in five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Baker.

Central to the film’s authentic portrayal of the dance scene was its soundtrack, which seamlessly blended various musical genres to reflect the protagonist’s journey. Hit the Strip, co-written and produced by Hook Slaya, emerged as a standout track. Its pulsating rhythms and catchy lyrics not only captured the essence of the dancehall genre but also mirrored Anora’s vivacious spirit and resilience.

The song played during a pivotal scene where Anora, embracing her newfound confidence, takes to the dance floor, captivating everyone around her. Notably, it was the longest-played song in the film, underscoring its significance to the narrative.

BL revealed that he has placed many of his songs with a sync company. “I have a bunch of songs with my co-writer Brett Bull placed within a Sync Company named Crucial Music,” he revealed.

“This track has brought me a lot more opportunities in upcoming Movie and TV projects through my publicist Contractor Music Group,” Hook Slaya added.

He has provided advice for other music producers trying to break into film placements.

“Honestly, it’s all about patience and persistence. There are so many people in this industry that think they can get famous overnight, or get placements without putting in years and years of work. But I am here to tell you that is not the way it works, nor should it be. You have to put in the work, you have to put in the hours and you have to be talented enough for your work to get recognized,” he said.

BL Tha Hook Slaya, whose real name is Bryan LaMontagne, hails from Boston, Massachusetts, but relocated to Jamaica in 2007.
