Bob Marley Movie Wins International Best Movie Award

“Bob Marley: One Love,” a film that tells the story of Jamaican reggae icon Bob Marley, was presented with the Best Movie trophy at the 2024 BET Awards ceremony on June 30, 2024. This was the first international honor given to the production from Tuff Gong and Paramount Pictures. “One Love, was directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and starred the English actor Kingsley Ben-Adir in the title role, with Lashana Lynch, the popular James Bond film actress, as his wife, Rita. James Norton featured in the role of Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records.

“One Love” wins big

Co-produced by Paramount Pictures and Ziggy Marley of the Marley family’s Tuff Gong production firm, “One Love” beat out seven other films nominated for the award in May 2024. These included “American Fiction,” “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “The Book of Clarence,” “The Color Purple,” “The Equalizer 3,” and “The Little Mermaid.” The Marley biopic earned nearly $180 million worldwide at the box office and is ranked as the fifth highest-grossing music biography in the United States and Canada.

Well-received by audiences

The film was released on February 14, 2024, Valentine’s Day, and while it attracted mixed reviews, it was an instant hit among fans of the reggae singer and social activist. It follows Marley at a critical period of his life, focusing on his development as an artist, his relationship with his wife, and the attempt on his life during a period of political strife in Jamaica.

Music featured at BET Awards show

In celebration of the film, Bob Marley’s grandson, YG Marley brought some of the island’s culture with a performance of Jamaican music to the ceremony’s stage. Marley featured his songs, “Praise Jah in the Moonlight” and “Survival” with his mother, musician Lauren Hill. Skillibeng also performed a set that included the song, “Jump,” with Gunna and Tyla and was enjoyed by the event’s attendees.
