The second round of the ISSA urban schoolgirls netball competition begins today at 2:30 p.m. at the Leila Robinson courts.
One team which is hoping to bring back the glory days of 2015 when they were crowned senior champions for their only ever title is the Wayne Stewart-coached Camperdown High. In that final they surprised the Kadie Ann Dehaney-led St Hugh’s team in overtime.
After topping Zone E with an unbeaten run, the east Kingston-based school will go up against Campion College in Group 1 action and coach Stewart is eager for his girls to get on court.
“Last year we failed to win a single match in the second round but this time around things will be much different as we expect to go very deep into the competition,” said Stewart.
With his junior team not making it to the second round this could be an advantage for Stewart.
“We can now inject a few of our top players from our junior team and this could make a difference and we are hoping to start off with a win in our opening match,” said Stewart.
Stewart is hoping that top players Latvia Hull and Kibibi McCarthy will hit top form at this stage of the competition where they will be playing five matches in a bid to move on to the semi-finals. Gaynstead High, last year’s beaten finalists, will be their biggest dangers. The top two teams in the group will advance.
Gaynstead and St Hugh’s High will not be in action today as their coaches were away on national duties t the Fast5 World Series tournament in New Zealand.
