Campion claim urban area under-16 title in dominant fashion

CAMPION COLLEGE are the 2024 ISSA Urban Area Under-16 champions.

Resuming day two of their contest against St George’s College at Kensington Oval with the eventual runners up on 103-7, in chase of 378 for victory, the game lasted just 4.1 overs.

St George’s were bundled out for 109, handing a massive 268-run victory to Campion.

Derval Ellis, Campion College assistant coach, was pleased that the team’s background work could have come to the fore in the manner it did.

“It was very pleasing because the guys worked hard throughout the whole season. Even before the cricket had started, the guys were working on their fitness and the technicalities, including batting, bowling, and also the mental aspect. Therefore, it was pleasing to see that hard work had come to fruition,” he said.

Campion were led by the outstanding batting pair of skipper Abraham Waugh and Zachary Buchanan, who cracked 126 and 125, respectively,, on Tuesday.

St George’s College in their reply, were led by Geovanni Grey, who scored 70 of his team’s 109 runs. Grey’s efforts paled against the bowling of Zachary Taylor, 3-19, and Antoine Campbell, 3 for 33.

Even with the massive 377 on the board and St George’s teetering on 103-7, Ellis was still cautious at the end of Tuesday, but yesterday, he lauded the efforts of Waugh.

“They always say that cricket is a game of uncertainty, so while I was comfortable but never thought we had in the bag until we bowled out the opposition. Playing at Kensington, you’re expecting the wicket to be grassy, and not a lot of youngsters are used to that because of the lateral movement. However, Abraham took a while to adjust but you can’t take away from him having notched up back-to-back centuries,” he stated.

Carlington Ebanks, head coach of St George’s College, said while it was disappointing to lose the final, he was proud of how far his team went.

“It’s a final, so you’re going to be disappointed losing it. We did pretty well this year with what we have, so I’m proud of the youngsters. We came here and competed, and while we didn’t get the result we needed, we just have to take it and move on,” he said.

Waugh described the innings as “one of my better ones”.

“I would say it’s one of my better ones. The start was a little shaky, but as the innings went along, I got into shape and just performed,” he said.
