CARICOM expresses ‘deep concern’ over Haiti’s transitional governance process

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has expressed deep concern about the ongoing transitional governance process in Haiti, following significant developments in the nation’s political landscape.

On November 11, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé was officially sworn in as Haiti’s new Prime Minister during a formal ceremony at Villa d’Acceuil. The appointment, authorized by Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council (CPT), came a day after former Prime Minister Garry Conille was dismissed from the role after just six months in office.

Established in April 2024, the CPT was tasked with guiding Haiti through its transitional phase by appointing leadership and overseeing governance reforms. However, the council has been fraught with political infighting and, more recently, allegations of corruption among some members.

In its statement, CARICOM acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing prime minister and emphasized the importance of stability and accountability as Haiti navigates its path toward free and fair elections. “CARICOM recognises the dedicated contribution of former Prime Minister Garry Conille and looks forward to early engagement with the new Prime Minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé,” the statement read.

The regional bloc reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Haiti in its transition, stressing that the process must be driven by Haitians themselves. CARICOM underscored the urgent need for cohesion among stakeholders to meet critical objectives, including the restoration of constitutional order, the security and welfare of citizens, and the successful conduct of elections, scheduled for November 2025.

“Democracy can thrive only with compromise, respect for the rule of law, and a commitment to the security and welfare of its citizens,” CARICOM stated. The organization pledged to remain a steadfast partner to Haiti and called for an early restoration of democratic institutions to address the country’s long-standing challenges.

The statement concluded with a message of solidarity for the people of Haiti, affirming CARICOM’s readiness to assist in achieving a stable and democratic future.
