Cavalier eyeing JWPL top spot

3 weeks ago 9

With early league leaders Frazsiers Whip out of action this weekend in the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL), Cavalier are eyeing the top spot when they take on Federal United today.

Cavalier will face Federal United in the first game of a doubleheader at the Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence at 4 p.m., with UWI taking on Proven Girls at 6 p.m.

Cavalier currently sit second in the league on 16 points, trailing Frazsiers Whip on 18.

A win for the Kingston-based club would see them going past the defending champions, a fact head coach Everdean Scarlett is well aware of.

“The game is very important for us. Winning means that we will finish the week at the top seeing that Frazsiers Whip are having their rest week,” he told The Gleaner ahead of the game.

Cavalier will enter the match high on confidence based on their last outing which saw them blanking Springers United 7-0.

Scarlett warned, however, he will not be underestimating their opponents as he admitted they are complete unknowns to his team.

“I’m not saying that we are taking Federal lightly because we know nothing about them but I want to think that we will have a pretty good chance of getting the win.

“We will be taking them on as any other game on the fixture. We won’t be complacent because tomorrow they may just turn up with their ‘A’ game and put on a pretty good showing,” Scarlett said.

For Federal, the fixture is an opportunity for them to turn their season around after a slow start to their campaign.

The St Catherine-based club sit ninth in the standings with just one win under their belt, a result which was handed to them after Springers United were judged to have fielded an ineligible player and forfeited their match week two fixture.

Also in action are Los Perfectos who will look to rebound from last week’s defeat to Arnett Gardens. They will face Mile Gully in an away tie.

Los Perfectos have fallen out of the league’s top three, a spot they will hope to regain after this weekend.

Arnett will be looking to stymie those goals, however, when they play hosts to Springers United in their encounter.

The Junglists will enter the tie as heavy favourites as Springers sit rooted at the foot of the table, still without a win.
