The legal team for Local Government Minister, Desmond McKenzie, has written Opposition Senator, Damion Crawford, threatening him with a multi-million dollar defamation suit.

The letter of demand sent on Tuesday to Crawford concerns statements Crawford made at a PNP stakeholders meeting at the Portmore Community College on Sunday.

Shaloy Smikle has more.

Damion Crawford, who is a former PNP Vice President, made allegations concerning the use of resources from the equalisation fund.

He also made disparaging comments about Minister McKenzie’s character.

Minister Desmond McKenzie’s attorney, Lemar Neale, fired back on Tuesday and told Crawford that his allegations are patently false.

Crawford was told that his false and reckless utterances are particularly egregious given his position as a lawmaker.

The Opposition Senator was told that his statements have caused serious injury to Minister McKenzie’s professional and business reputation.

Crawford has been told to publish a retraction of the statements on all digital platforms, including his social media pages, as well as in the print media, giving it greater prominence than what was afforded to his offending publication.

The Opposition Senator has also been told to tender a full and unreserved apology to Minister McKenzie. He’s also being asked to undertake not to publish any further defamatory statements about the Cabinet Minister.

The Opposition Senator has also been told to enter into discussions with McKenzie’s legal team about compensating the West Kingston MP for damage done.

McKenzie’s legal team says that should Crawford fail to act as directed, within three days, then he is under instruction to proceed with a defamation lawsuit.
