Dunbeholden finally finds a win

DUNBEHOLDEN REGISTERED their first victory under new coach Harold Thomas and moved out of the relegation zone, grabbing three crucial points with a 3-1 win over Chapelton Maroons at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.

Entering yesterday’s fixture, Dunbeholden were looking at a stretch that saw them going 10 games without a victory and were eager to snap that form. They were given the perfect start, taking the lead in the ninth minute through Dwight Merrick.

While Chapelton Maroons enjoyed good spells of possession, goalscoring opportunities were few and far between in the first half.

The best chance for an equaliser after clumsy defending allowed Merrick onto the scoresheet fell to Jahvon James in the 43rd minute, but his thunderous right-footed strike was tipped over the bar by Dunbeholden’s custodian, Damian Hyatt.

In the second half, Dunbeholden went on the hunt for more goals and doubled the lead through the experienced Nickoy Christian in the 57th minute.

Catching Chapelton goalkeeper Prince-Daniel Smith napping, Christian boldy struck from the halfway line to leave the defenders with drooped heads.

Dean Andre Thomas helped Dunbeholden add more misery, capitalising on the acres of space he found himself with in the box to calmly slot home in the 83rd.

Marlon Allen pulled back a consolation for Chapelton in the 88th.

Jermain Douglas, head coach of Chapelton Maroons, said his team did not compete.

“We didn’t show up any at all. It was a poor performance as the turnover rate was through the roof. You want to see effort from the players, and it was like we were just mannequins. It wasn’t good enough. I think it’s more psychological than anything else, so we have to work and see how we can get them up for the next game,” he said.

Winning coach Harold Thomas, who declared he had a mountain to climb last week, was more satisfied yesterday.

“We got three goals, almost kept a clean sheet, so I’m satisfied with the progress. I was impressed with the organisation. We had a plan to suffocate Chapelton Maroons and for the most part, it worked,” he said.

In the late game of the doubleheader at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, Racing United notched another win, Ranaldo Biggs’ 20th-minute goal the only one of their encounter against Harbour View.

Over at Catherine Hall, Montego Bay United left no stone unturned in their home game against Waterhouse, winning 3-1 through goals from the in-form Shaniel Thomas in the 31st minute, Jean Claudio Ferreira in the 44th, and Johann Weatherly in the 71st.

Mario Simms got Waterhouse’s consolation in the 78th minute.
