The Electoral Office of Jamaica, EOJ, is reminding candidates who contested the February 26 local government elections, that they are to file a Return of Election Expenses by Monday, April 8.
In a statement on Thursday, the EOJ says under Paragraph 53 of the Eighth Schedule of the Representation of the People Act, candidates must submit an election return to the Returning Officer for the Electoral Division within six weeks after the date of the election.
The EOJ says the requisite form may be collected at the Office of the Returning Officer in each constituency Mondays to Thursdays between the hours of 8:30AM and 4:30 pm.
And on Fridays from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.
It’s also reminding candidates that Under Section 101 of the Representation of the People Act, any candidate who fails to make a return or makes a false declaration in his return, commits an offence.
If convicted, they are liable to a fine of minimum fine of $20,000 or a maximum of $80,000.
They can also face imprisonment for a term not less than three years.
In addition to the fine or imprisonment, the court may order that the candidate or agent be disqualified from holding any post of election officer for a period of not less than seven years from the date of conviction.
