Esher Primary School in Hanover is the beneficiary of a fully outfitted smart room from the Digicel Foundation.
The facility, which is equipped with technology devices such as laptops, tablets a printer and smart screen, is part of a programme by Digicel to bridge the digital divide by providing students in primary schools across the island with access to cutting-edge technology.
The objective is to provide a learning environment that promotes digital skills and prepares students for the challenges of the future.
Esher Primary is the second institution in the Ministry of Education and Youth’s Region 4 to receive a smart room under the initiative, following Anchovy Primary.
Speaking at the recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, Regional Director for Region 4, Dr. Michele Pinnock, said that the smart room will benefit schools across the entire parish.
“In Region 4 we believe in collaboration, and so our Hanover principals are here… and so are their students. They are also going to be using this lab,” she said.
For her part, Senior Operations Manager, Digicel Foundation, Jodi-Ann McFarlane, highlighted the entity’s commitment to creating a future-ready nation through education.
“At Digicel Foundation we know that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education is the foundation upon which innovation is built; therefore, we are building smart rooms to expose our youth to STEM,” Miss McFarlane said.
“I can personally attest to the incredible potential that I have seen that lies within our young people. Armed with the right tools, children can excel and exceed their expectations, especially children here in the west,” she added.
Member of Parliament for Hanover Western, Tamika Davis, welcomed the smart room, noting that it will contribute to the technological advancement of students.
“There are really no words that can express the gratitude that is being felt not only by the school but the entire parish. We are proud as a parish to have this lab here. I am sure that the children will show their gratitude in the work that they will produce, in the scholarships that you will hear of, and the many inventions that will come from this smart room.” she said.
