EXCELSIOR HIGH tightened their grip on local schoolgirls’ football as they drubbed Holmwood Technical 9-1 in the final of the ISSA/TIP Friendly Society Schoolgirls competition at the Stadium East field yesterday. The victory gave Excelsior an eighth straight schoolgirls’ football title.
The winners were led by a four-timer from Destiny Powell.
The Xavier Gilbert-coached team started in fine fashion as they opened their account in the second minute with a goal from Powell. Three minutes later Jada-Lee Bryan made it 2-0 courtesy of a well-timed header beating the outstretched arms of Holmwood Technical’s custodian Brihana Staple. Cassandra Smith’s strike in the 15th minute and a second from Powell in the 23rd minute made it 4-0 by the halfway mark.
In the second half Excelsior continued their offensive onslaught as Shauntai Pryce got on the scoresheet in the opening minute. By the 69th minute it was 6-0 as Powell’s well -placed effort found its resting place in the back of the net. She registered her fourth of the encounter two minutes later as she skilfully navigated her way through the defensive line. Holmwood managed to get on the scoresheet in the 73rd minute courtesy of a well-taken free kick by Jamara Jones. Goals from Andrene Smith in the 74th minute and a penalty from Ricquanna Richards completed the 9-1 demolition.
Gilbert, the head coach of Excelsior, stated that he was pleased his team executed the game plan for majority of the game.
“I think we made it easy. We wanted to score one or two early goals and we got that and once we got that it was difficult for them to come back. I thought we maintained the pressure and kept them in their half a lot. However, I was disappointed to have conceded in the end as I wanted to go perfect in the season,” he stated.
Maurice Duncan, head coach of Holmwood Technical, was disappointed with his team’s performance in the final.
“We started off very poor and it killed the spirit of the team. We made some awful mistakes defensively and we didn’t execute what we did in the training sessions,” he shared.
