Government Senator, Abka Fitz-Henley, says an attempted explanation made by the Mayor of Kingston, Andrew Swaby, for leaked conversations which suggest the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation, KSAMC, has inappropriately used public funds to finance PNP caretakers is not worth the paper it is written on.
Mayor Swaby was responding to a Nationwide News exclusive on Thursday, which revealed PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell in December last year responding to an enquiry by now discarded PNP caretaker Lawrence Rowe about why Rowe only got $300,000 from the KSAMC while other PNP caretakers were given $500,000.
Campbell responded by suggesting that the KSAMC issued the funds strategically because it anticipated the calling of by-elections in Denham Town and Chancery Hall.
Mayor Swaby issued a statement on Friday morning and said that municipalities do not disburse cash and that at no point did the KSAMC authorise or facilitate cash disbursements to any individual.
Mayor Swaby also strongly denied that the KSAMC used taxpayers money for strategic political purposes.
Senator Fitz-Henley says it is clear from what has been revealed in the media that the PNP General Secretary was confirming Rowe’s indication that the KSAMC had issued money to PNP political representatives and that Dr. Campbell said the funds were issued for strategic political reasons.
Fitz-Henley says Mayor Swaby’s attempted explanation is an insult to the people of Jamaica.
