The impact that former England manager, Sven Goran Eriksson had on football during a coaching career that lasted nearly half a century was quickly felt once news of his death at the age of 76 became known.

England’s official X account posted: “We are deeply saddened that Sven-Göran Eriksson, who managed the Three Lions from 2001 to 2006, has passed away aged 76. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. Rest in peace, Sven. You will be greatly missed.”

FA president Prince William said: “Sad to hear about the passing of Sven-Goran Eriksson. I met him several times as England manager and was always struck by his charisma and passion for the game. My thoughts are with his family and friends. A true gentleman of the game.”

Lazio was the club where Eriksson truly became internationally known, delivering only the club’s second-ever Scudetto in 2000. There was a simple message of immense gratitude: “Thank you for everything you’ve done for us, mister.”

Sven was manager at Manchester City just as the club was about to take off: “We would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Sven-Goran Eriksson, who has passed away at the age of 76. Rest in peace, Sven.”

Part of a lengthy tribute from Sweden’s football federation summarised his incredible legacy in his home nation: “With his outstanding coaching success, Svennis has inspired leaders in Swedish football for several decades, and his influence extends far beyond Sweden’s borders.”

Liverpool, having touchingly granted Eriksson’s dying wish to manage a game at Anfield, said: “Rest in peace, Sven-Goran Eriksson. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Sven’s family and friends at this extremely sad time.”
