Former coach of Jamaica’s senior women’s football team, Charlie Edwards, has welcomed the announcement from Concacaf for the establishment of the Women’s Club Champions Cup.
The tournament will be an annual affair, to include the best clubs from North and Central America and the Caribbean and will crown a regional women’s club champion.
The tournament will also be the sole path through which Concacaf clubs can qualify for the new FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, which FIFA has committed to launching in the near future.
The inaugural Concacaf W Champions Cup will be the 2024/25 edition, with Preliminary Round and Group Stage matches scheduled for August, September, and October and a final four centralised semifinals, third-place match, and final in May 2025.
Edwards believe this will encourage the Jamaica Football Federation to do more to improve the quality of women’s football locally.
Charlie Edwards.
