After a troublesome season, Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle came up with the goods in what should be his very last event, winning the Diamond League final in Brussels earlier today.
With all eyes on the clash between Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece and Wayne Pinnock, Gayle snuck in to land a season’s best 8.28 metres to win ahead of Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer, who cut the sand at the 8.16-metre mark.
Tentoglou ended third with 8.15, while Jamaicans, Carey McLeod, 7.85, and Pinnock, 7.43, were fifth and sixth.
But that wasn’t the only success for Jamaica, as Ackeem Blake clocked 9.93 seconds to grab the Diamond League title ahead of the United States’ Cristian Coleman, 10 seconds flat.
Coleman’s teammate Fred Kerley was third in 10.01, while the other Jamaican in the race, Rohan Watson, was eighth in 10.25.
There wasn’t much joy for Danniel Thomas-Dodd, the Jamaican finishing fifth in the women’s shot put final after only managing one legal throw.
Thomas-Dodd threw 18.78 metres to finish behind the United States’ Chase Jackson's season-best effort, 20.64.
Jackson’s throw left Germany’s Yemisi Ogunleye (19.55) well beaten.
Canada’s Sara Mitton was third with a throw of 19.52 and the United States’ Raven Saunders, was fourth with 19.08.
