SENIOR GROUP I joint leaders Camperdown and Gaynstead high schools will clash in today’s feature game of the second round of the ISSA Urban Schoolgirl Netball competition as the third set of matches tip off at the Leila Robinson Courts.
With four points from two wins each, both teams sit atop Group I from which the top two teams advance to the competition’s semifinals.
The Dalton Hinds-coached Gaynstead, who were beaten in the final by St Catherine last year, want the opportunity to be counted among the last two teams standing again. The team comes into the encounter on the back of 42-18 and 46-16 wins over Norman Manley and Immaculate Conception respectively.
After failing to win a game in the second round last year, the Wayne Stewart-coached Camperdown have made big improvements this season and like Gaynstead have scored two wins in a row in the group.
In their first game they got by neighbours Vauxhall 23-15 and fought off Campion to end 34-22 winners.
Though they don’t have to win the group to qualify for the second round, keeping an unbeaten run, as well as possibly playing against a weaker semifinal team are serious considerations.
In junior action, defending champions, St Catherine, and The Queen’s School are unbeaten in Group II with two wins. Both stand a chance of keeping those unbeaten runs going tomorrow.
St Catherine, who have a 60-4 win over Convent of Mercy (Alpha), should get the better of Wolmer’s Girls. Queen’s are expected to get by Norman Manley.
Wolmer’s Girls look set to continue their excellent form in junior action where they are joint Group I leaders with Gaynstead, who they will meet today in a top-of-the-table clash.
The Tracy-Ann Griffiths-coached Wolmer’s, who were beaten finalists last year, have been awesome, enjoying a 49-14 win over Vauxhall and the 50-3 devastation of Campion in their last two outings.
But Gaynstead are no pushovers, having second-round wins over Norman Manley (28-18) and Immaculate (25-21).
Group II leader’s St Hugh’s with two from two matches should win number three when they face Jonathan Grant.
Junior matches will begin at 10 a.m., with the seniors to take to the courts at 11:00.
