Golding Wants Speaker to Withdraw Reprimand of Former Clerk

6 months ago 27

Opposition Leader Mark Golding is again calling on the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Juliet Holness, to withdraw a letter of reprimand sent to the former Clerk to the Houses of Parliament, Valrie Curtis.

Ms. Curtis retired last Friday, April 6, calling time on a 29 year career in service to the Houses of Parliament.

In the letter, dated March 22, 2024, Mrs. Holness accused Ms. Curtis of gross dereliction of duty in the handling of reports from the Auditor General’s Department.

According to Mr. Golding the letter amounts to an abuse of power.

In the letter, the House Speaker says the clerk failed to adhere to her November 7, 2023 ruling on the handling of reports from the Auditor General.

Mrs. Holness says Ms. Curtis’ actions threatened to bring the Houses of Parliament into disrepute. She says Ms. Curtis’ failure to comply with procedures undermined the effectiveness of the parliament.

Mr. Golding is reiterating his call for a public apology to be made to Ms. Curtis.
