Government senator and psychiatrist, Dr. Saphire Longmore, is questioning Opposition Leader Mark Golding’s mental capacity to lead the country.
Dr. Longmore raised her concerns during her State of the Nation presentation in the Upper House on Friday.
Mahiri Stewart tells us more.
Dr. Longmore brought to parliament the now infamous image of Opposition Leader Mark Golding, holding the chains of a Black man in bondage during a skit at a party rally last year.
The scene at the time brought widespread condemnation from the general public and the governing Jamaica Labour Party, JLP.
Dr. Longmore made it clear she was not attempting to make a critique based on race.
However, Dr. Longmore says for someone seeking the highest office in the country, to even be caught in such a position, leaves their decision-making in question.
Dr. Longmore went further, noting that the skit was put on by the very same opposition leader, who at the time was a British citizen.
Those comments incensed Opposition Senator Lambert Brown, who rose to his feet and sotto voce decried her as racist while loudly shouting that he was proud of his leader.
Meanwhile, opposition senator, Gabriella Morris, used her State of the Nation presentation to hit back at Senator Longmore. She accused Dr. Longmore of dishonesty and manipulation regarding race.
She also accused the JLP of hypocrisy on the matter of dual allegiances.
