Heimir Hallgrímsson has resigned as coach of the senior Reggae Boyz with immediate effect.

Hallgrímsson’s decision was communicated to Jamaica Football Federation, JFF, president Michael Ricketts and the players on Sunday.

The Icelander says he’s leaving the national programme in a stronger position than when he came.

Hallgrímsson took charge of the national team two years ago with a clear mandate from the JFF to qualify for the World Cup finals in 2026. He had two years to run on his contract.

The JFF has now tasked its Technical Committee to begin the search for a new coach. It is not clear if Hallgrímsson’s backroom staff, including assistant John Wall, will follow.

Meanwhile, Jamaica ended their campaign at the 2024 Copa America with a 3-0 defeat to Venezuela in Texas on Sunday.

All three goals came in the second half from Eduard Bello, Salomon Rondon and Eric Ramirez.

Jamaica suffered defeats in all three group games to finish last in the group which was won by Venezuela with maximum nine points.

Ecuador grabbed the second qualifying spot after drawing nil all with Mexico.
