Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness says the People’s National Party, PNP, wants to deny the Jamaica Labour Party the distinction of being the party that creates a 15th parish in the country.
Dr. Holness says this is the simple rationale behind the opposition’s stance on the government’s push to elevate Portmore to parish status.
The prime minister was addressing a mass gathering of Labourites at the East Central St. Catherine Constituency Conference on Sunday.
The PNP has raised objections to the manner in which the government is moving to transition Portmore to parish status. They argue the government is attempting to undermine the democratic will of the people for narrow political gain.
However, Dr. Holness says for Portmore to take centre stage as a modern metropolis, it must be able to take charge of its own development.
