Hurdlers stole the show at last weekend’s Youngster Goldsmith Classics at the National Stadium.
Among the girls, St Jago High’s Shanice Williams led the way after producing a meet record and personal best of 10.52 seconds to win the Class Four 70 metres hurdles. Camelia Hacker of Hydel High was second, also in a personal best 10. 79, with Malaisha Shirley of Convent of Mercy (Alpha) third in 11.08.
Edwin Allen High’s Tashana Godfrey made it back-to-back meet records in the Class Three 80m Hurdles after producing a personal best 11.19. She won ahead of Wolmer’s Girls’ Jadae Harris (11. 59). Macaela Gordon of Edwin Allen was third in 11.60.
There were some very tight finishes in Class Two and Class One 100m hurdles. In Class Two, Tiana Marshall of Wolmer’s had to stave off the fast-finishing Malayea Duncan of St Jago to win in a season’s best 13.34. Duncan was second in a personal best 13.35, and Akeelah Bell of Wolmer’s also clocked a personal best 13.52 for third.
Jody Ann Daley of Hydel High and Santae Wilson of Edwin Allen were involved in a fierce contest in Class One. Daley won the battle in a personal best 13.64. Wilson clocked a personal best 13.68 for second, and Deyneca Colistock of Green Island took third in a personal best 14.26.
Earlier, the pace was set in the 400m hurdles, the opening event at the meet. Edwin Allen’s Kelly Ann Carr won in a season’s best 58.29 with Hydel’s Natassia Fletcher (59.25) in second and Vere Technical’s Shaneica Wint (1:02.66) in third.
Adrian Phillips of Jamaica College (JC) also wrote his name in the record books. Competing in the Class Four 80m Hurdles, he produced a personal best of 11.63 for the win. His teammate, Deshaun Richards, was second in a personal best 11.92. Third-place finisher Kyle Frankson of St George’s College also clocked a personal best 11.93 for third.
Calabar High picked up three wins in hurdle events. Jaeden McBean won the Class Three 100m Hurdles in 13. 57 ahead of Deshawn Johnson of St Elizabeth Technical, who ran a personal best 13.66, and Jhadon Dawkins of Kingston College (KC), who was third in a personal bes 13. 71.
Fresh off his success the previous week in New York in the indoor 55m hurdles, Shaquane Gordon of Calabar romped to victory in the Class One 110m Hurdles in 13.48. Daniel Beckford of JC clocked a personal best 13. 65 for second, and Khaief Morris of JC was third in 13.89.
Calabar’s third success came in the Class One 400m Hurdles where Robert Miller clocked a personal best 51.51 ahead of JC’s Princewell Martin (52.00) and Trevoy Smith of Herbert Morrison Technical, who was third in 52. 66.
There was a major upset in the Class Two 110m Hurdles as the howling favourite, Marquis Page of St Jago, finished fourth. Christian Wallace of JC came from behind the pack to win in 13. 72, ahead of KC’s Timothy Purrier, second in a personal best 14.12, with Roneil Burke of JC placing third in 14.13.
In the Girls’ 100m, Edwin Allen’s Kerelle Etienne stole the show in Class Two as the Dominican produced a personal best 11.65 to win ahead of St Jago’s duo of Maleyea Duncan (11.88) and Adora Campbell (12.00).
Sabrina Dockery of Lacovia High produced the fastest time on the day among females after winning the Class One 100m in 11.62, ahead of Edwin Allen’s Jounee Armstrong (11.78) and Danielle Lewis (11.84) of Holmwood Technical.
St Jago’s Shannia Campbell topped Class Three in 11.91 ahead of Edwin Allen’s Tashana Godfrey (12.08) and her teammate, Danielle Clarke (12. 09).
Excelsior High’s Riquelme Reid clocked a personal best 10.31 to top the Class One Boys’ 100. Jaydon Williams of Holmwood Technical won the Boys’ Class Two 100m in 10.69 while Andre Genus of KC captured the Class Three 100m in person’s best 11.37.
