ISSA Amends Regulations on Foreign Transfers

The Inter Secondary Schools Sports Association has amended it’s rules and regulations regarding the transfer of student/athletes from overseas.

The resolution was moved and carried at the last general meeting of ISSA members in June.

All students transferring from a secondary institution outside of Jamaica will be subjected to a waiting period of one year before becoming eligible to compete in ISSA run competitions, irrespective of their age.

The students will also now be regarded as members of the school’s quota for each sport.

However there are students who will be exempt from the restrictions.

Children of Jamaican Nationality or whose parents or grandparents are Jamaicans and who are under 16 years old.

Also exempt will be children who meet ISSA’s eligibility criteria for 6th form students and are enrolled in 6th form at a member school…however they will be regarded as a member of the school’s quota.

Children whose parents are members of the diplomatic core and are under 16 years old and children domiciled in Jamaica under a United Nations convention and are under 16 years old will also be exempt from the one year waiting restriction.

Foreign nationals whose parents are domiciled in Jamaica for work or study can also be exempted from the restrictions, but the member principal must first make the request and submit appropriate supporting documentation.

The changes will take effect September 1, 2024 and will therefore affect students enrolled for the new academic year beginning in September.
