Technical leader of Jamaica’s team to the World Under 20 athletics championships in Lima, David Riley, says the team performed well given the conditions in the Peruvian capital over the five days of competition.
The athletes competed in very cold conditions but still ended fourth in standings with five medals, including four golds and one bronze.
Kerrica Hill, in the 100m hurdles, and Alana Reid, in the women’s 100 metres, were the individual gold medal winners. Both sprint relays teams also copped gold while the bronze came from Shanoya Douglas in the women’s 200 metres.
Riley says Jamaica is notorious for performing well below their best when the competition is held in winter-like conditions.
There’s also concerns that the athletes, having started preparation for the annual ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships, are fatigued because of the non-stop competition.
