What is a Jamaican pumpkin?

Jamaican pumpkin is also known as Jamaican calabaza or West Indian pumpkin. It is sometimes referred to as a tropical pumpkin. Tropical pumpkin is a type of squash grown in tropical or subtropical regions such as Jamaica and other Caribbean countries. On average, Jamaican pumpkins can weigh between 10 to 20 pounds, but they can sometimes grow even larger. Jamaican pumpkins have ribbed green or greyish-green skin with orange flesh. The flesh contains large, flat seeds that are usually cream-coloured. Farmers save these seeds for replanting, or it is consumed as a nutritious snack when roasted. When pumpkin is cooked, the flesh has a smooth, creamy, sweet texture.

Can you eat the skin of a Jamaican pumpkin?

Jamaican pumpkin skin is edible but usually not eaten due to the slightly bitter taste compared to the sweet and creamy flesh. The skin is typically hard but becomes tender after thorough cooking, which some people may eat.

Is pumpkin good for juicing

When it comes to juicing, pumpkin is often an overlooked ingredient. Pumpkin is an excellent choice for juicing due to its nutritional value, antioxidants, fibre, and hydration benefits.

In the typical Jamaican home, pumpkin is not consumed as a juice but incorporated into a punch recipe. When making pumpkin punch using a Jamaican-style recipe, alcohol is frequently added, but it can also be non-alcoholic.

Pumpkin punch ingredients
  • Pumpkin: Choose a mature Jamaican pumpkin for its natural sweetness and smooth texture when cooked.
  • Alcohol: For this recipe, I use Dragon Stout, a popular Jamaican beer. It has a strong flavour, which makes the punch richer. Alternatively, you can substitute another dark beer, such as Guinness or rum.
  • Supligen: Supligen is most commonly used as it is a popular Jamaican nutritional drink, which contributes a smooth, creamy texture to the punch. However, I use unsweetened oat milk as a non-dairy alternative in the recipe below, providing a similar smoothness.
  • Spices:Nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla are essential for any Jamaican punch drink recipe. These fragrant and sweet spices will enhance the overall flavour of the drink.
  • Condensed milk: Condensed milk not only sweetens the punch drink but also adds a rich creaminess.

How to make Jamaican pumpkin punch

  • Prepare the pumpkin: Peel and remove the seeds from the pumpkin, then dice it into small cubes. Cook the diced pumpkin in boiling water until tender. Drain and cool the cooked pumpkin before using it to ensure a soft and creamy base for the pumpkin punch.
  • Blend all ingredients: Combine the cooled cooked pumpkin, dragon stout, supligen (or alternative), nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and condensed milk in a blender. Blend until smooth and well combined. Taste and adjust the sweetness to your preference. Serve over lots of ice.

Non-alcoholic pumpkin punch recipe

Everyone can partake in the pleasure of Jamaican pumpkin punch thanks to the non-alcoholic drink recipe. For a non-alcoholic pumpkin punch, you may use this same recipe except for the alcohol. You can customise your pumpkin punch by adding ingredients like an Irish moss drink, raw peanuts, flaxseeds, banana, or even ginger.

  • 621 ml (2 ½ cups) Water
  • Wash and peel the pumpkin, then dice it into 2 inches cubes.

  • Add the pumpkin to a pot with the water and put to cook until soft. Leave to cool.

  • You can use Guinness in place of the Dragon Stout beer.
  • There are several Supligen alternatives.
  • I used unsweetened oats milk, which is why I used that amount of condensed milk. If you use Supligen, reduce the amount of condensed milk to prevent making the punch too sweet.
