Jamaicans Honored: Ernie Smith, Rohan Marley, Etana, and More Recognized for Reggae Month in Florida

The City of Lauderhill proudly celebrated Black History Month and Reggae Month by honoring influential figures in reggae music and Black heritage. During a special City Commission Meeting at Lauderhill City Hall, Mayor and Commissioners recognized Jamaican and global icons for their contributions to culture, music, and history.

The evening began with a cordial reception at 4:30 PM, where invited guests gathered to reflect on the achievements of trailblazers who have shaped history. The main event followed at 6:00 PM, featuring proclamations presented to honorees for their lasting impact on reggae and Black culture.

Reggae Month Honorees

Several key figures in reggae music were recognized for their influence in preserving and promoting Jamaica’s rich musical heritage:

  • Rohan Marley – Entrepreneur, son of reggae legend Bob Marley, and founder of Marley Coffee, continuing his father’s legacy through business and culture.
  • Etana – Grammy-nominated reggae singer known for her soulful music and powerful messages of empowerment and positivity.
  • Ernie Smith – Veteran reggae artist with a career spanning over five decades, known for classic hits like “Duppy Gunman” and “Life Is Just for Living.”
  • Olivia Grange – Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, a longtime advocate for the promotion of reggae music and Jamaican culture.
  • Oral Durloo – Recognized for his contributions to reggae’s growth and influence worldwide.
Black History Month Honoree

In addition to celebrating reggae’s impact, the City of Lauderhill honored Jamaican, Dr. Julius W. Garvey, son of Pan-African leader Marcus Garvey, for his work in preserving and advancing his father’s vision for global Black empowerment.

Other Black History Month honorees included:

  • Markenzy Lapointe – Former United States Attorney for Southern District of Florida
  • Judge Rodney Smith – United States District Judge
  • Dr. Kitty Oliver – Historian, Academic Author
  • Bobby Henry – Publisher of the Westside Gazette
  • Commissioner Robert McKinzie – Broward County Commissioner

All were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community and the advancement of Black heritage.
