The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has appointed businessman Omar McFarlane as the official ambassador for the under-17 Reggae Boyz, to boost the team’s preparations for the 2025 FIFA Under-17 World Cup qualifiers.

In his role of ambassador, McFarlane’s duties will see him playing a important part in helping the JFF secure the required funding and support needed for the team throughout the qualifiers set for next year, as well as the global tournament.

McFarlane was selected by the JFF because of connections to the island, as well as his dedication towards the development in youth football. He is founder of the renowned Champion Football Club in Florida.

The club is a noted non-profit football club that is aimed towards providing Jamaican players with opportunities to play football in Florida.

Speaking about his new role, McFarlane expressed his enthusiasm to be partnering with the JFF and the under-17 programme.

“I am honoured to be appointed as the ambassador for the under-17 Reggae Boyz,” he said. “I am committed to leveraging my connections and resources to ensure that our young players have the best opportunities to succeed and make Jamaica proud on the world stage.”

JFF General Secretary Dennis Chung signalled his approval of the appointment and sought to thank McFarlane for partnering with the federation.

“We are thrilled to have Omar on board as our ambassador for the under-17 team. His passion for football and dedication to youth development align perfectly with our goals for the national youth programme. We look forward to working together to achieve great success.”

The JFF will be hoping Jamaica can increase its global competitiveness at the youth level, in light of the recent changes to the format for the under-17 World Cup.

In March, FIFA announced the under-17 World Cup will expand from 24 teams to a new total of 48, with Concacaf allotted eight slots. In addition, the competition will be held annually, as of next year.

In a bid to increase Jamaica’s chances of qualification, the under-17 Boyz have taken part in five training camps this year, as well as a pair of recent international friendlies against Trinidad and Tobago.
