The governing Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, is calling for general secretary of the People’s National Party, PNP, Dr. Dayton Campbell, to resign as a commissioner of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica, ECJ.
The JLP also want Dr. Campbell to be sacked as PNP general secretary and opposition spokesman on agriculture.
The calls are in response to a leaked voice note of Dr. Campbell explaining to then PNP caretaker Lawrence Rowe, that the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation, KSAMC, had strategically distributed money to PNP caretakers in anticipation of two by-elections.
That conversation between Rowe and Dr. Campbell is alleged to have happened on December 22 last year.
Daina Davy reports.
In the leaked conversation, Rowe reportedly asked Dr. Campbell to explain why he had only received 3-hundred thousand dollars from the KSAMC, while other PNP representatives had received larger sums.
This is what Dr. Campbell said in response.
In a press conference at the party’s headquarters on Belmont Road in St Andrew on Thursday, senior JLP spokesman Marlon Morgan said the leaked voice note is scandalous.
Morgan says Dr. Campbell should resign from the ECJ.
Morgan says if Dr. Campbell fails to step aside, PNP president and Opposition Leader Mark Golding should sack him.
The alleged misuse of funds at the KSAMC was first reported by Nationwide News on January 29.
The chairman of the KSAMC, Mayor Andrew Swaby issued a statement on January 31 saying municipalities do not disburse cash. He says the KSAMC did not authorise or facilitate cash disbursements to any individual.
Swaby says if any anti-corruption probe is underway, his administration stands ready to cooperate fully.
It’s understood at least two anti-corruption agencies are investigating.
The PNP has yet to formally respond to the allegations.
Meanwhile, Marlon Morgan says PNP president, Mark Golding, must declare whether he was aware of the situation involving Rowe, Dr. Dayton Campbell and the KSAMC.
He wants Mark Golding to say what action he has taken as party leader.
