JLP Veterans Renew Call for Golding to Prove He’s Renounced British Citizenship

Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, veterans Everald Warmington and Daryl Vaz are calling on opposition leader, Mark Golding, to prove he has indeed renounced his British citizenship.

Speaking at a meeting of the JLP’s Area Council Two in West Portland on Sunday, the two legislators argued that unless Golding can prove he has allegiance only to Jamaica, voters should consider him disqualified from seeking the office of prime minister.

Mahiri Stewart has that story.

Last May, multiple figures within the Jamaica Labour Party urged the People’s National Party, PNP, president to clarify whether or not he was a British citizen.

Mr. Golding admitted to holding dual citizenship in an interview later that month. The admission drew the ire of several senior members of the governing party, who called on Golding to renounce his British citizenship.

Mr. Golding claimed that he would renounce his citizenship if the Jamaican people saw it fit. A month later, the PNP president announced that he had initiated the process to renounce the foreign citizenship.

Mr. Golding announced the completion of the renunciation in September. Jamaicans have never been offered proof of that renunciation.

Everald Warmington wants to see the evidence.

Warmington has launched numerous racially charged attacks on the PNP president. Sunday was no different.

West Portland member of parliament Daryl Vaz also challenged Golding to prove he was loyal only to Jamaica.

Mr. Vaz says if the PNP president is unable to do so before the next general election, he should be rejected by the Jamaican electorate.

Meanwhile, Daryl Vaz says he has told JLP workers throughout Area Council Two to prepare themselves for the announcement of the date for the next general elections.
