Julien Alfred Wins Big at CANOC Sports Awards

St. Lucia’s Olympic champion Julien Alfred was the big winner at the inaugural CANOC Sports Awards in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The 24-year-old Alfred won two awards, the Caribbean Female Sports Personality of the Year and shared the Breakthrough athlete of the year prize with Olympic triple jump champion Thea LaFond of Dominica.

In addition to her Olympic 100m Gold and 200m Silver, Alfred also won the World Indoor 60m title and the Diamond League 100 series.

Jamaica’s Olympic Discus champion and Olympic record holder Roje Stona was beaten into third for the Caribbean Male Sports Personality of the year awards by Cuba’s five time Olympic Wresting champion Mijain Lopez Nunez and Grenada’s Lindon Victor.

Meanwhile, Alfred capped a superb weekend when she was named on a short list of five for the World female track athlete of the year award.

World Athletics also released the five names for male track athletes of the year.

Alfred will battle four other Olympic champions for the title, among them Beatrice Chebet of Kenya, Faith Kipyegon also of Kenya, Gabby Thomas and Sydney McClaughlin Levrone of the USA and Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic.

The men’s list also has five Olympic champions including Noah Lyles, Rai Benjamin and Grant Holloway of the USA, Letsile Tebogo of Botswana and Jakob (YA-COB) Ingebrigsten of Norway.

The vote to determine the Track Athlete of the Year finalists is now open on World Athletics social media platforms and will close on 27 October.
