Jamaican artist Ryan Riley, known to many as Kush Riley and a son of legendary singer Jimmy Riley, has passed away at age 38.
His older brother, Reggae star Tarrus Riley, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram Tuesday, expressing his grief.
“Rest Ez 👑Ryan Only Jah Knws💔,” Tarrus wrote. “My Younger Brother Ryan that many of u know and Love worldwide has made his Transition and is no longer here with us in the Flesh. Sleepless Days n Restless Nights Trying to make it make sense …💔.”
Tarrus remembered his brother as a “warrior” who lived life on his own terms, honoring him as a father, son, brother, and friend. “He lived the life he loved n loved the life he lived,” Tarrus shared, calling him “1 of 1” and asking for divine guidance to grant his brother “perfect peace.”
No cause of death has been disclosed.
While his career didn’t reach the heights of his father or brother, Kush was determined to carve his own path in the industry. “I want to be known as Kush Riley. I want to build my own brand,” he told the Gleaner in a 2019 interview.
“Of course, I want to build on my father’s legacy but I want to do it my way. I won’t let the expectations of people dictate how I do this music thing. I understand myself and I’m delivering how I know I should because I know who I am and what I have to offer.”
Throughout his journey, Kush stayed focused on promoting his own sound and positive message. His music, including tracks like Old Fashion, What A Body, News and Bring It, can be found on Spotify and YouTube.
As news of his passing spread, the reggae and dancehall community poured in their condolences.
