Jamaica’s 2024 Diamond League winners Ackeem Blake and Tajay Gayle have gained wild cards to next year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo Japan.
Blake won the 100 metres at the Diamond League final and Gayle the men’s long jump.
World Athletics had mentioned that they would not award this year’s Diamond League winners with wildcards to Japan, but would instead issue them to next year’s champions since the Diamond League will be over before the start of the World Championships.
However the sport’s governing body has made an about turn and all Diamond League winners this year will be issued wildcards.
Respected track and field pundit Leighton Levy says the initial decision by World Athletics was unfair and he’s happy they’ve had a change of heart.
Levy says the decision will also make preparation for the world championship a lot easier for Blake in particular and he hopes the sprinter can finally go on to fulfil his potential.
