DESPITE A perfect start to the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) season, Los Perfectos head coach, Maurice Duncan, is under no illusions this year will spring no surprises and will be approaching his campaign a game at a time.
Los Perfectos sit second in the JWPL standings on six points, level with defending champions Frazsiers Whip, who lead with a greater goal difference.
Duncan’s side started their campaign with the 6-1 thumping of Federal United before a closer 2-0 win over Wi-Fi United on Saturday.
Speaking with The Gleaner after their game over the weekend, Duncan praised his team for a professional performance and getting the win despite battling hot conditions.
“It is a good start to the season for us. Today was a much more competitive game for us compared to the last one. The condition was really hot during to the time that we started to play but it was a good game for us, however,” he said in his post-match interview.
“I see where we have to work on some areas when the pressure comes on to the team but I’m comfortable with the scoreline and it is a good step for us going forward.”
Los Perfectos stand as one of the early title contenders with a team that boasts several current and former national players.
Leading the team as captain is former Reggae Girl Sashana Campbell, who brings years of international experience to the club.
Campbell was a part of the Reggae Girlz contingent that competed at the 2019 and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup
She is also experienced at the JWPL level having represented reigning champions Frazsiers Whip in the inaugural Concacaf W Champions Cup last year.
Leading the attacking lines will also be U20 Reggae Girl Andrene Smith, who has already scored five goals this season.
Despite the pedigree of his go-to players, Duncan maintains the season will be decided by the team’s effort rather than individual brilliance.
“It is a team effort because we have a lot of outstanding players. We have Andrene Smith who played well and Sashana Campbell who is also a former Reggae Girl and we have some other players who would have also represented Jamaica as well,” Duncan said.
“But at the end of the day, it is 11 players on the field so we play together as a team so we’ll win as a team,” he continued.
With the winners of the JWPL set to compete in the annual W Champions Cup competition, Los Perfectos will have lofty ambitions come the end of the season.
However, their focus will only be on the next game, as Duncan believes it is far too early in the season to be eyeing the international competition.
“We’re here to compete. It is one game at a time for us. We haven’t reached that stage as yet to be thinking like that but when the time comes, we’ll see how far we can go.”
