AFTER A thrilling second round at the Jamaica Open, Benjamin Martin of Trinidad and Tobago and Mac McClear of the United States emerged tied atop the leaderboard at six under par following day-two action at Tryall in Hanover yesterday.
Martin followed up his opening round 70 with a remarkable 4-under-par 68 for a two-day total of 138, capitalising on calm morning conditions to gain ground and put pressure on the field.
After starting the day two strokes off the lead, the Trinidadian braved illness and the hot, steamy conditions to rack up seven birdies and three bogeys in another steady display.
“It’s always nice to lead and I hope it can stay that way for the final round. It is key to stick to the routine, take it one shot at a time, and try your best,” said Martin.
Overnight leader McClear followed up his 5-under par 67 on day one and ended with a 1-under 71 in round two for a total of 138.
Close behind, American Ryan Sullivan and Frenchman Pierre Viallaneix are tied for third at five under par. Sullivan carded a solid 2-under 70, while Viallaneix shot a 3-under 69, both golfers finishing with 139 strokes.
Sullivan’s accurate drives and Viallaneix’s touch around the greens kept them in contention, just one stroke shy of the leaders.
Canada’s Jacob Lehman matched Martin for the round of the day, following a sparkling 4-under 68, which vaulted him into fifth place at two under par.
Justin Burrowes continued to fly the flag high for Jamaica, as he shot a one over par 73 to add to his opening round 41 to be in 7th place at 144.
National junior player Trey Williams took over the lead among the amateurs, matching his opening round 75 to be six over par 150.
Overnight amateur leader Oshae Haye is second with 153 while defending champion Sean Morris is third with 154.
Canada’s Allan McLean leads the senior professional category with Owen Samuda out front in the senior amateur section.
