MELBOURNE, Australia (CMC):
WEST INDIES skipper Hayley Matthews produced a fine all-around showing to help her Melbourne Renegades to their first win of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) on Friday.
Led by a player-of-the-match performance by Matthews, who took two wickets and also scored 41 runs, the Renegades defeated the Perth Scorchers by six wickets at the Junction Oval.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Scorchers were dismissed for 140 in 19.4 overs, with Beth Mooney hitting the top score of 36.
Sophie Molineux was the main destroyer with 4-17, while Matthews (2-21), Alice Capsey and Georgia Wareham took two wickets apiece.
Matthews, who faced 27 balls and struck seven fours and one six, then returned to share a 102-run opening stand with Courtney Webb, who made 61 from 40 balls, to give the Renegades the perfect launching pad.
With the Renegades in full control, Deandra Dottin hit a massive six to seal the victory with 14 balls remaining.
