Montego Bay United’s (MBU) coach Rodolfo Zapata has hailed his team’s gritty performance following their 0-0 draw against Portmore United in the Jamaica Premier League yesterday.
It was the second consecutive draw for MBU, who are atop the table with 14 points.
“We played a good game. It was very tactical. We created four or five clear chances to win the game, but we couldn’t finish. I am happy with my boys’ performance because they played positively. With the quality players that we have, goals can come at anytime,” Zapata said after the match, which was played at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
“Portmore United are a good, young team and very disciplined as well,” he added.
According to Rodolph Austin, the coach of Portmore United, last night’s game was very competitive.
“I am very proud of the point we got today. Coming into a hostile environment to play the top of the table team, we could have probably nicked it, and so could they. Our plan was to win but we have to play smart. When you are away from home and you get a clean sheet, you have to be satisfied,” Austin said.
He continued. “Our next match is at home, and we play a different game at home. We can he more offensive.”
In the hard-fought evenly balanced game, MBU were slightly dominant but missed too many clear-cut chances to take the lead.
Portmore, too, got a fair number of chances to steal a win in a hostile environment but came up short.
In the latter part of the game, MBU became more aggressive and pushed hard for the winner, but they failed to convert the chances they got. At least five golden opportunities came their way, but they were kept out by Portmore United’s goalkeeper Daniel Russell.
In one of their best chances, MBU’s Owayne Gordon weaved his way through the Portmore defence and sent a powerful shot at goal, but Russell dived well to keep a clean sheet.
