He is known as ‘Mr Dependable’ in the Mount Pleasant team, and Sue-La McCalla has been carrying his team’s load all season and has extended that streak into the playoffs.

On Sunday, McCalla, as he has done in the past, stepped up in the 73rd minute to score and ensure that his team will enter the second-leg Jamaica Premier League semi-final all square against Waterhouse next Sunday following the 1-1 draw in the opening leg at Sabina Park.

McCalla’s towering header was his seventh goal of the season, and the 31-year-old defender was keen to point out that despite the score line, the defending champions are confident that they will get the job done come the second leg.

“It took us a while to get into our game rhythm because we have not been playing competitive games for a couple of weeks, but we know we will always create opportunities. However, we need to be more clinical.”

McCalla’s man of the match performance is not new to the centre back, who can also slot into the role as a mid-field utility player. His confidence stems from his early career in which he won the league with Portmore United in the 2018-2019 season.

Coming up trumps on the big occasions is also not foreign to the former Humble Lion and Cavalier player as his two goals in last year’s final against Cavalier earned him the player of the final accolade.

With that confidence and game time now intact, McCalla is eager to get the next 90 minutes under his belt and ensure that the St Ann-based side is in a position to defend their JPL title.

“We are always confident, and once we come out and play our game, we are likely to be victorious,” McCalla said.
