Mixed Reactions Over Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert’s Return As Candidate in South Trelawny

Political commentators are divided in their views on the JLP’s decision to reinstate Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert as its candidate to contest the South Trelawny constituency in the upcoming by-elections.

The by-election is set for November 22.

More in this report from Shaloy Smikle.

Marissa Dalrymple-Philibert resigned as Member of Parliament for South Trelawny last September.

Her resignation followed a report from the Integrity Commission that recommended that charges be laid against her for making false declarations about her ownership of a motor vehicle.

That matter is still before the courts.

But speaking during Wednesday’s post-cabinet media briefing, Prime Minister and JLP leader Andrew Holness, says the decision to reinstate Mrs. Dalrymple-Philibert was due to popular demand from the constituents.

But that decision has been met with mixed reactions.

Former parliamentarian and political commentator Lloyd B. Smith described the move as premature.

The PNP has selected popular funeral home director and former independent councillor for the Lorrimers Division, Paul Patmore, as its candidate in South Trelawny.

Mr. Smith says given the possible strong challenge that Patmore will bring, the JLP’s decision may have just been a mere strategic move to retain the seat.

That view was also shared by fellow political commentator Dr. Nadeen Spence.

But she notes that it’s not surprising that Mrs. Dalrymple-Philibert has returned, despite her ongoing IC matter.
