Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, says the removal of political campaign materials across the city will continue until the next general election is formally declared.
He was speaking on Thursday at the monthly meeting of the St. James Municipal Corporation.
Daina Davy reports.
On Tuesday, the Opposition PNP called on the Mayor of Montego Bay to cease and desist from removing the party’s advertising boards in the city.
PNP General Secretary, Dr. Dayton Campbell, said the removal of the campaign material was against the law.
Dr. Campbell said it was established practice, supported by law, that during the lead-up to an election, political parties are allowed to erect posters and signs advertising their candidates.
However, Mayor Richard Vernon says the campaign signs will continue to be removed until the next election date is announced.
But, the mayor’s words did not sit well with PNP Councillor for the Mount Salem Division, Kerry Thomas.
According to Mr. Thomas, Mayor Vernon is wrong.
That comment triggered an uproar at the meeting.
