ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC):
CRICKET WEST Indies (CWI) has awarded year-long annual contracts to 90 men and 14 female cricketers from across the region, for the 2024-2025 season.
The news was announced in a statement on Sunday by CWI which revealed that the newest batch brought the total of contracted regional players for the year to 104, and 164 in total, including senior and academy players.
CWI described the move to award contracts to 14 female players as “a groundbreaking milestone”, and “a significant step forward in its strategic commitment to Elite and High Performance cricket, and signals a continued investment in the growth of the women’s game in the Caribbean”.
Director of cricket at CWI, Miles Bascombe, said the move showed the organisation’s dedication to supporting women’s cricket in the region.
“Awarding contracts to these talented female players underscores CWI’s commitment to advancing cricket in the region.
“We are extremely proud of the Maroon Warriors, who are on their way back from an impressive semi-final showing at the Women’s T20 World Cup,” Bascombe said.
“The only way to ensure that West Indies teams, both men and women, have consistent showings at the international level is to ensure the development and growth at the regional level.
“CWI is dedicated to making this further investment in our regional talent and building a strong foundation for future success, which is in line with our strategic plan,” he added.
