An unnamed team from the Intellectual Property Unit of the Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force unloads cases of counterfeit cigarettes to be destroyed in the kiln at Caribbean Cement Company on Monday, June 3, 2024. Some 624 cases of cigarettes valued at $400 million were burnt as fuel at the cement company’s plant at Rockfort, Kingston. It was done under the cement maker’s ‘Future in Action’ programme, which utilises waste as an alternative source of fuel to reduce its carbon footprint. The process was watched over by Deputy Superintendent Victor Barrett, head of the CTOC Intellectual Property Unit; Franklin Murillo, managing director of Carreras Limited, a cigarette trader that’s working with the authorities to tamp down on cigarette smuggling; and Jorge Martinez, managing director of Caribbean Cement.
