Opposition spokesman on agriculture, Dr. Dayton Campbell, is expressing concern over the government’s policy on irrigation.
Dr. Campbell highlighted the Parnassus Agro Park, commissioned in Clarendon last week, as an example of what he’s described as the government’s failure to properly use the country’s arable lands.
The Parnassus Agro Park is a £17 million investment by the UK Caribbean Infrastructure Fund. Four hundred of the 700 acres at the facility are allotted specifically for small farmers.
Prime Minister, Dr. Andrew Holness, commissioned the irrigation system for the park last Wednesday. He says there’s an urgent need to focus on local agriculture to combat inflation and improve food security.
According to Dr. Campbell, the points now being expressed by the prime minister have long been raised by the opposition.
