PNP general secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell says the party is preparing for the general election now that it’s set to take control of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation, KSAMC.
The party will take the reins of the prized municipality after it prevailed in a magisterial recount in the Kintyre division of East Rural St. Andrew. That recount victory confirmed the 20-20 tie in the capital city.
Mahiri Stewart has that story.
The JLP filed a magisterial recount in the Kintyre Division following the February 26 local government elections.
This came after the initial count revealed that their candidate, Kelvin Clarke had come up short by a margin of 32 votes to the PNP’s Vivienne Brown-Bond.
Speaking with Nationwide News, Director of Elections, Glasspole Brown confirmed the PNP’s win in the Kintyre division following the recount.
This victory meant that the JLP and PNP were level in the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation, with 20 apiece. By virtue of having the popular vote, the PNP will now officially take control of the KSAMC.
The PNP is expected to elect Councillor Andrew Swaby of the Vineyard Town division as the new mayor of Kingston.
The PNP’s general secretary, Dr. Dayton Campbell, says Brown-Bond’s margin of victory was only two votes less than the initial count.
Dr. Campbell says the KSAMC victory cements the party’s success in the local elections. He says the PNP is now in preparation mode for the general elections.
Meanwhile, King’s Counsel, Tom Tavares-Finson says he’s pleased recounts in the KSAMC have concluded.
But Mr. Tavares-Finson says he’s disappointed that a potential recount in the Mavis Bank division fell through from what he says was a late filing by the PNP’s lawyers.
