Reid, Card head athletes for World Under-20 Champs

Paris Olympic Games representative Alana Reid and Wolmer’s Boys’ sprinter Gary Card have been named by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) in a squad of 43 athletes for the World Under 20 Championships in Lima, Peru, August 27-31.

Reid who placed third in the 200 metres two years ago in Cali, Colombia was a member of the women’s 4x100m team which finished fifth in Paris. She will contest the 100m in Peru, an event in which she is the under-20 world leader with her season’s best of 11.09 seconds.

Other notable members of the female team are Kerrica Hill and Theiana-Lee Terrelonge of Edwin Allen High school. Hill is the defending champion in the 100m hurdles. She is the world leader with 12.85 seconds.

Terrelonge who has been having a fantastic season will contest the 100m where she is ranked number three among under-20 athletes with a season’s and personal best 11.13.

Skyler Franklin, the winner of the under-20 girls’ 400m at the national championships and fifth-fastest in the world at this level with a best of 51.01 seconds, will not be at the championships. She has been unable to get her paperwork on time after changing her allegiance from the United States to Jamaica.

Card will be the highest-ranked Jamaican male at the meet where his best of 20.50 seconds puts him at number three in the 200m. He is fourth in the 100m with his season’s and personal best of 10.07.

World under-20 record-holder and defending triple jump champion Jaydon Hibbert will not defend his title at the championships. Hibbert pulled out after injuring his hamstring at the Olympic Games. He placed fourth in the event in Paris.

Jamaica will be hoping to better their performance of two years ago when the country captured a record 16 medals, the best-ever haul at these championships.
