Renewed Calls for Policies to Combat High Cost of Living

Two political commentators are calling for fiscal policies to combat the high cost of living in Jamaica.

Chartered accountant Dennis Chung says while the monetary response to inflation has been on track, not enough is being done on the fiscal side.

Inflation impacts the price of everything needed for daily living, from food to housing.

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica, STATIN, is reporting that the country’s point-to-point inflation rate as at May 2024 was 5.2 per cent.

This was 0.1 percentage point lower than the 5.3 per cent recorded for April 2023 to April 2024.

Economist and Opposition Spokesman on Commerce, Dr. Andre Haughton agrees that many structural issues such as high energy costs must be addressed.
