Despite breaking the Olympic record to win the men’s Discus in Paris this summer, Jamaica’s Rojé Stona has missed out on the list of five nominees for Male Field Athlete of the year.
The shortlist was released by World Athletics, marking the opening of the voting process for the World Athletes of the Year Awards 2024.
Stona threw 70m on the nose on his fourth attempt, breaking the Olympic record in Paris to become the first Jamaican male or female to win gold in a throwing event at the Olympic Games.
The athletes were selected by an international panel of athletics experts, comprising representatives from all six continental areas of World Athletics.
The nominations reflect some of the standout performances achieved at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, World Athletics Indoor Championships, one-day meeting circuits and other events around the world.
Sweden’s Pole Vault record breaking machine Mondo Duplantis leads the nominees, all of whom are Olympic champions including Stona’s coach Ryan Crouser of the US the Shot Put champion, Triple Jump champion Jordan Fortun of Spain, Ethan Katzberg of Canada the Hammer Throw champion and Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece the Long Jump champion.
The five for the women’s award were also released and like the men they are all Olympic champions, among them Belgium’s Heptathlon champion Naffy Thiam, Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukrainethe High Jump champion, Nina Kennedy of Australia the Pole Vault champion, Tara Davis-Woodhall of the USA the Long Jump champion and Valarie Allman also of the USA the Discus champion.
The vote to determine the Field Athlete of the Year finalists is now open on World Athletics social media platforms and will close on 20 October.
The nominees for the Track Athlete of the Year awards will be announced on 21 October and the nominees for the Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year awards will be announced on 28 October.
