PORT ANTONIO, Portland:
The team aboard the boat Safe Passage won the eighth staging of the Superstars of Port Antonio Blue Marlin tournament, which climaxed on Saturday, with an award and prize-giving ceremony at the Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio, Portland.
The team pocketed US$7,000, a wooden plaque, a sea-striker 9-inch knife, a 3,000-yard nylon fishing line, and many other prizes. Safe passage, which tagged and released six marlins, amassed a total of 2,700 points and won for themselves an invitation to the Off-shore World Championship to be held in Costa Rica in April 2025.
The three-day fishing tournament, which started on September 26, attracted nine boats as 14 other boats were forced to cancel due to severe weather conditions in the Cayman Islands as a result of tropical storm Helene, which later became a hurricane.
Chairman of the Superstars of Port Antonio Blue Marlin Tournament, Robert “Bobby” Stewart, had high praises for the anglers who, according to him, were fully energised over the three days of gruelling competition, which saw a total 0f 11 marlins being tagged and released.
“Firstly, I have to thank Mayberry Investments, our title sponsor. It is also good that Chris Berry of Mayberry participated in the tournament and was actually at sea, fishing,” commented Stewart.
“We all know the story about the late cancellation of the 14 boats due to severe weather, but it was still a wonderful tournament. The entertainment was good, and on Friday night, we had dancehall artiste Beenie Man, who gave a stellar performance, even though he was injured in what could have been a serious accident. I have to commend the anglers for their participation, and the turnout and support from the local people was very encouraging, “he added.
Second place went to the team aboard Still Keepin it Jiggy, which won for themselves a wooden plaque, 3,000 yards of nylon fishing line, and US$4,000. Third place went to Too Contangarous, which won for themselves US$2,000, a wooden plaque, and a bottle of Monymusk 10-year-old rum.
