A DEFIANT unbeaten century from left-hander Kemol Savory rescued the Guyana Harpy Eagles on day one of their West Indies Championship round six encounter against hosts Jamaica Scorpions at Sabina Park.
Savory will resume on today’s second day on 127 as the Harpy Eagles have, so far, posted 278 for seven after being asked to bat first.
Savory’s innings could not have been more timely as the Harpy Eagles were in trouble early at 61 for six.
The career-best knock came off 251 balls and included 14 fours and three sixes as Savory shared in a 127-run seventh-wicket partnership with Gudakesh Motie, who made a valuable 56 from 86 balls with eight fours and a six.
Captain Tevin Imlach will resume today on 33 as he and Savory have added 90 runs for the eighth wicket.
Savory was pleased that he could rescue his team’s innings with the vital knock.
“I believed I read the situation well, and I decided we were going to stay at the crease and accumulate some runs. It is amazing to score runs under pressure, and I want to continue to just do what I do best and that is bat.”
The Jamaica Scorpions started the day well with fast bowler Ojay Shields cranking up some pace to trap both openers Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Raymon Perez in front for one and four, respectively. He would return later in the day in another spell to snare his third wicket when he had Veerasaamy Permaul caught for 15.
Off-spinner Peat Salmon also got among the wickets, removing Kevin Sinclair for 23 and Ronaldo Alimohamed for a duck.
Derval Green and Abhijai Mansingh have also picked up a wicket apiece.
